Framing Art Easily

I give framing tips often for my customers so here is a helpful guide to take the fear out of framing.

While framing stores are often local and support small business, it may not fit all budgets. If this is not a viable option for you, then this blog post is for you.

When I am looking for a frame I consider these points:

  • mat/opening size (what size is the art I am framing.)

  • frame size ( how much space do I want this frame to take up)

  • mat thickness, this is going to be preference. I like 1’’-2’’ for 12x16’’ and under. The larger you go, the wider the frame can become if you prefer.

  • is the frame going to hang on the wall or stand up on a table?

  • what color/finishes do I want the frame to have?

Then I’ll hit the internet or my art supply store with my criteria. “white frame, opening 11’’ x 14’’

I will also take my art with me if I haven’t made my mind up on frame style.

I prefer to get frames that already come with a mat because I don’t have the tools to cut my own mat boards.

However, you could buy a frame and a mat separately, you will just need to be more confident in the measurements of your art.

Remember OPENING and OVERALL SIZE.

The overall size of the mat needs to fit into the opening of the frame.

The opening of the mat needs to fit what portion of your art you want to showcase.

The size of the frame needs to fit the space you are choosing to display. Make sure the frame has D Rings for a wire or something that will allow you to hang it on a nail easily.

I hope this is helpful for you! You got this!
